GOLD JEWELLERY: KNOW YOUR GOLD

The element gold, Gold is element 79 and its symbol is Au. Gold was first discovered as shining, yellow nuggets. The name is the Anglo-Saxon word for the metal and the symbol comes from the Latin ‘aurum’, gold. It is soft and the most malleable and ductile of the elements; an ounce (28 grams) can be beaten out to 187 square feet (about 17 square meters) in extremely thin sheets called gold leaf. Because gold is visually pleasing and workable and does not tarnish or corrode, it was one of the first metals to attract human attention.

What is the unit measurement of gold and diamond?

  • Karat = a unit for measuring the purity of gold
  • Carat = a unit of weight in gemstones, e.g. diamonds

The purity of gold is defined either in karats or fineness. Gold comes in varying levels of purity; from 9 karat gold is the lowest purity to 24 karat gold, which is a 100% pure gold no added ingredients and pure gold is much too soft and pliable and that’s why not used in making regular form of gold jewellery.

24K vs 18K vs 14K Gold: Which Karat Is “Better?

18-karat gold is 75% gold and 25% alloy metals, which makes it durable and hard. So, its wide lyutilized for making rings, watches, and allied wearable gold jewellery. Its rich yellow look makes it perfect for engagement rings and similar jewellery items. However 18K gold is significantly more expensive, as it contains twice as much pure gold as a 9K alloy, percentage-wise. However as a low-purity gold alloy, 9K gold is harder than 18K gold.

This means that a piece made of 18K gold will be relatively easier to scratch, and its parts will bend more easily.9K gold jewellery, on the other hand, will take longer to wear out due to its greater hardness. The above mentioned principle might not always be valid, however, as the hardness and durability of an alloy depends on the types of metals that make it up as well as their proportions. So, in some cases, it is possible for a 9K alloy to be actually softer than an 18K alloy.

Perhaps one of the most important facts you should take note of is that while an 18K alloy is considered gold, this is not always the case with a 9K alloy, depending on the country it is sold in.

Gold Purity and Alloy

  • 24K GOLD is pure gold.
  • 18 K GOLD contains 18 parts gold and 6 parts silver and/or copper, nickel and zinc, making it 75% gold.
  • 14K GOLD contains 14 parts gold and 10 parts of copper, zinc, silver and nickel, making it 58.3% gold.
  • 12K GOLD contains 12 parts gold and 12 parts of another metal(s), making it 50% gold.
  • 10K GOLD contains 10 parts gold and 14 parts another metal(s), making it 41.7% gold. 10K gold is the minimum karat designation that can still be called gold in the US.
  • 9K GOLD contains 9 parts gold and 15 parts such as silver, tin, nickel, zinc, palladium, etc, making it 41.7% gold

18k and 14k yellow gold engagement or wedding rings have the best balance of gold and alloyed metals.

Alloys with a higher gold content will have a color that is more saturated and yellow. In contrast, lower-karat alloys will look paler in comparison.

Compared with 9K pieces, 18K jewellery tends to have a richer color. 9K jewellery has a more light-colored tone and recommended for affordable gold jewellerycollection.

Referring to the Diamond Shape and is determined by how diamonds facets interact with light. Precise artistry and workmanship are required for a well-cut diamond so its proportions, symmetry and polish deliver the magnificent return of light only possible in a diamond.

2. CLARITY

A measure of purity and rarity of the stone. Natural diamonds are the result of carbon exposed to tremendous heat and pressure deep in the earth. This process can result in a variety of internal characteristics called ‘inclusions’ and external characteristics called ‘blemishes.

The GIA Diamond Clarity Scale has 6 categories;

  • Flawless (FL) No inclusions and no blemishes visible under 10x magnification
  • Internally Flawless (IF) No inclusions visible under 10x magnification
  • Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS1 and VVS2) Inclusions so slight they are difficult for a skilled grader to see under 10x magnification
  • Very Slightly Included (VS1 and VS2) Inclusions are observed with effort under 10x magnification, but can be characterized as minor
  • Slightly Included (SI1 and SI2) Inclusions are noticeable under 10x magnification
  • Included (I1, I2, and I3) Inclusions are obvious under 10x magnification which may affect transparency and brilliance

3. COLOR

Refers to the natural tint inherent in white diamond. White diamond is the best known of all. However, it has an incredible palette of colours. There are almost as many shades of white as there are letters in the alphabet (D being the most flawless and Z the richest in yellow highlights). In addition to its white shades, the diamond has many more or less unusual shades. The rarest is the red diamond, of which there are very few. Blue, green, pink and orange diamonds are also rare.
